International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin
Allegation of War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, and Genocide
Pre-Trial Chamber Issues Warrant After Investigation
The Pre-Trial Chamber of the United Nations-backed International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The warrant was issued on March 17, 2023, following an investigation into alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The ICC's decision to issue an arrest warrant for a sitting head of state is a rare and significant event. The Pre-Trial Chamber found that there is reasonable ground to believe that Putin bears criminal responsibility for the atrocities committed in Ukraine.
The arrest warrant authorizes the ICC to request the cooperation of other countries in apprehending and surrendering Putin to the Court.
